Khaosan Road Becoming Global Cannabis Destination
2 min readBANGKOK – Khao San Road is becoming first-choice for global cannabis vacation among stoner travellers where weed wonderland was established in Thailand since the first Southeast Asian country to decriminalize marijuana, hundreds of cannabis shop have sprung up with an entire marijuana-themed shopping mall, Plantopia, its shops half-hidden behind the haze of smoke created by customers trying out the product.
Marijuana plays a keys role in Khaosan’s economic and helping local entrepreneur as well as attracting green visitor from all over the world. Especially who want to experience the happiness in ‘the Land of Smile’, a fivefold increase in new cannabis shops operating in the Khao San Road area since last year.
Carl, stoner from Holland told the reporter that he really likes Thailand’s vibe by the beautiful culture and friendly people, He can’t wait to booked the flight when realize that cannabis is no longer illegal in Thailand, However he believes that cannabis would be a big opportunity for Thailand’s tourism
Mr. Sanga Ruangwattanakul, president of the Khao San Road Business Association, stated that cannabis products are in high demand among foreign tourists with an estimated more than 60 cannabis shops operating in the Khao San Road area, up from about 10 shops a year ago, with 90% of customers being foreigners.
“This product not boost tourism directly, but it created a unique selling point for Thailand, as we are the first country in Asia to decriminalise cannabis, It is undeniable that foreigners visited the shops to purchase cannabis for smoking.” he said.
Mr. Sanga also suggested the regulation should allow recreational purposes, in addition to medicinal purposes, but under a stricter rule, such as restricting smoking zones and prohibiting consumption in public areas, and not allowing shops to open near schools. While sales of the products should also have daily limits based on a specific amount.
